  • Abstract: The focus of the present project is the hindcast of surface wind fields over the whole Adriatic Sea with a fine spatial resolution (about 4 km by 4 km), through a high-resolution nonhydrostatic meteorological model, for the a period from November 2008 to February 2009, hopefully extendable to March 2009. In this period several relevant storm surge cases occurred in Venice, same of them not well forecasted at that time (the major events occurred: 1, 10, 11, 14, 15 December 2008, 3, 7, 8, 18 February 2009) or not well understood. The project will evaluate if and how tha spatial resolution of the wind field forcing influences the quality of the storm surge hindcasts. At present, dinamical storm surge forecasts use ECMWF wind fields at 0.25 by 0.25 degree of resolution, while with the meteorological hincasts obtainable in the framework of this project they will be forced with 0.04 by 0.04 degree wind fields.
