- Abstract
- Disclosed is a fat esterification and/or transesterification process, particularly of fats with high levels of acidity, comprising at least one step of reacting said fat in a solvent in the presence of a catalyst based on ZrO2 or Al2O3 on silica at a temp. between 100° and 250°, wherein, in said catalyst based on ZrO2 or Al2O3 on silica, ZrO2 is present in quantities of less than 15 wt.%, essentially in the absence of any other oxides aside from the silica, or Al2O3 is present in quantities of less than 15 wt.%, essentially in the absence of any other oxides aside from the silica. For example, transesterification of rape seed oil was done with 2.5 g of a catalyst comprising 0.56% Al2O3 on silica having a BET surface area of 487 m2/g, a pore vol. of 1.43 mL/g and a mean pore diam. of 117 A, the catalyst was pretreated at 270° for 30 min and then under vacuum at the same temp. in a glass reactor, following said pretreatment, 25 mL (22.75 g) of rape seed oil for food use is added and the mixt. transferred to a steel autoclave, 30 mL (23.7 g, approx. 13:1 in moles) of anhyd. MeOH is added, the autoclave is sealed under 1 bar of inert gas (N2) and the temp. adjusted to 160° (P = 19 bar), and the reaction mass stirred, after 20 h, the autoclave is cooled, the reaction mixt. is filtered and the lipid phase sepd., the resulting product is analyzed by GC according to the method in UNI 22053:1996.
