  • The invention concerns a novel high-resolution echographic system for sea subbottom imaging of sediment structures and archaeological remains. The system consists of two paraboloidal transducers: the transmitter, a pulsed sound source exploiting the implosion of a vapour bubble generated by an electric spark at its focus, and the receiver with a piezoelectric ceramic at its focal point to detect signals reflected by sea subbottom targets. Although designed for archaeological research, the system can be advantageously used in a wide range of applications, e.g.: to investigate pipeline and cable routes, study offshore habitats and map the distribution of marine plants, support geotechnical investigation and map the lateral and vertical distributions of unconsolidated sediments as well as heavy-metal contaminated sediments. Moreover, it can be a valid device in marine acoustic tomography researches where very high resolution is a compulsory requirement. (literal)
