  • With viroid discovery, about thirty-five years ago, it was established that infectious agents structurally much simpler than viruses may replicate in plant cells, systemically invade a susceptible host and, in many viroid-host combinations, cause severe diseases. The adoption of control strategies to limit or prevent viroid spread became an obligation to avoid relevant economic losses in several susceptible crops. With this manuscript, the aim of the author is to supply participants to the training course on “Detection and identification of viroids damaging potato and fruit trees” with an updated bibliographic overview of milestones in viroid research. Some detailed protocols for viroid detection are reported in the second part (training activity) of the manuscript (literal)
