  • In this chapter we summarize some recent research on early language acquisition. We will discuss this topic by focusing on the continuity both across modalities (from gestures to ‘gesture and words’), and intra-modally (from lexicon to grammar). In the first part we will discuss the role of gesture, its interplay with first words and combinations in typically developing children. These studies were carried out both in Italian and in cross-linguistic comparisons. In the second section we will briefly analyze the results of some research on the link between gestures and speech in children with cognitive impairment, namely in children with Down syndrome (DS). The third part of the chapter will focus on the relationship between vocabulary and grammar in typical populations, also referring to results obtained by research on different languages. Finally, we will summarize some recent work regarding the development of lexicon and grammar in children with Down syndrome. The entire chapter is a tribute to Liz Bates’ scientific work, which has strongly influenced our research on language acquisition. (literal)
