Abstract
  • On behalf of the International Society for Horticultural Science, it is an honour and great pleasure to welcome all of you to the IV International Congress on Artichoke. The Congress has been organised by the Institute of Vegetable Crops for Processing of the National Council of Research and sponsored by the Mediterranean Agronomic Institute - CIHEAM- IAM/B and by the Department of Science of Crop Production - University of Bari. Nowadays the artichoke world area harvested is about 124.000 ha, with a total production of 1.315.000 t; Italy, with over 50.000 ha and 513.000 t) is by far the main producing country. Puglia is the first region in Italy for area harvested, 17.000 ha and total yield, 185,000 t. Bari, the regional capital of Puglia, is the seat of an important University; research on artichoke has been carried out for over 40 years by the Institute of Agronomy of the Agriculture Faculty, and since 1972 also by the Institute of Vegetable Crops for Processing. I am sure that the IV Congress, continuing in the tradition of the previous three international congresses held in Bari in 1967, 1972 and 1979 respectively, will be a unique opportunity to update the state of the art of research on artichoke, cardoon and related wild species. The number of participants, about 150, representing 18 different countries from all over the world, evidence the large interest in this kind of vegetables and the expansion in areas in which it was previously almost unknown. Apart the papers offered by the scientists from countries traditionally involved in artichoke research, for the first time, results of studies carried out in Albany, Australia, Germany, and Thailand will be presented. I wish this meeting will create good opportunity to have a close collaboration among the scientists and countries to develop the activities under the auspices of ISHS. Even a cursory review of the Congress papers reveal that the topics foreseen by the Organizing Committee such as production and culture; genetic, breeding and seed production; biotechnology and tissue culture; physiology and biochemistry; post-harvest, storage technology, processing and product development and disease and pest management, receive major emphasis. In addition to the scientific programme, the last day of the Congress will be organised a workshop on the problems and the perspectives of artichoke improvement in Italy in a presence of technicians, growers and traders. Finally, I would like to extend my great appreciation to all of the members of the Organizing Committee and to those of the Scientific Committee for their contributions to the Congress. (literal)
