  • Logistics and transport play a decisive role in the economic growth of firms and they have a critical effect on the competitiveness of the goods and services offered. Although the Italian logistics market is only the fourth largest in Europe, the considerable development of Mediterranean maritime traffic has led to a concentration of supply in a few large logistics operators and to an intensification of the relationship among the different actors of the supply chain. In this scenario southern Italy plays a strategic role, thanks to its geographical position and to the development of transhipment through hub ports like Gioia Tauro and Taranto. Notwithstanding these favourable conditions, the evolution toward an integrated transport system, in which different transport modes and operators co-operate in the supply of door-to-door services, has not yet been accomplished. The aim of this chapter is to outline the role of logistics and transport operators in southern Italy. To this end, a sample investigation was conducted by means of a questionnaire distributed among the logistics and transport operators in Campania. After describing the structural characteristics of the Italian logistics and transport markets, the results of the empirical survey were evaluated in the light of the main trends previously outlined.
