- Gas phase (aerosol) synthesis is representative of a class of standard routes to fabricate both organic and inorganic nanoparticles. Examples of such processes are flames, furnace flow reactors, electrospray systems, spark sources, laser ablation, plasma reactors, bombardments of ions. The advantages of such methodologies are the possibility to control the chemical, physical and micro-structural properties of the particles, the fact to be continuous processes and the low cost. Light scattering techniques are powerful diagnostics to infer and on-line the properties of small particles. Here, a brief review of light scattering theoretical approaches to describe scattering by aggregates of small particles is reported. Thereafter, two examples of characterization of carbon and metal nanostructures using polarized laser light scattering techniques are presented. In particular, a flame and a flow-reactor set-ups are used to generate soot and zinc particles and clusters, respectively. The feasibility of a number of Static Light Scattering experiments to infer without sampling, properties of soot fractal aggregates and zinc non-fractal clusters and nanocrystals is demonstrated and discussed with respect to the literature up-to-date.
