  • The hydroxyls present on the surface of hydroxyapatite (HA) are able to initiate the polymerisation of epsilon-caprolactone (CL), not only at 185 °C under vacuum, but also at room temperature in open system. A polymer layer ionically linked to the substrate, enhancing the compatibility between the two phases in composite biomaterials, is formed on its surface. The FTIR spectra of the products contain both the absorption bands of HA and the typical poly(epsilon-caprolactone) (PCL) absorption bands. The band at about 1552-1558 cm–1, attributed to the carboxylate anion, confirms the presence of ionic bonds between the substrate and the polymer. (literal)
