- The chest contains both the respiratory system (RS) and a significant part of the cardiovascular system: the whole pulmonary circulation, left and right atriums and ventricles, great vessels, and a part of the aorta. Therefore, cardiovascular system work is influenced by cyclic thoracic pressure (Pt) variations caused by RS work. Moreover, both systems realise the common task, i.e. they have to cooperate to perform the gas exchange and transfer (from/to ambient air to/from cells). The existence of both interaction and cooperation suggests that modelling of the cardiovascular system cannot be really accurate without RS modelling unless a specific problem is analysed and the influence of RS may be neglected.
