  • To accomplish the requirements of interventional MRI or to develop more specific experimental fMRI paradigms, researchers are getting interested in realizing active interfaces with electrically powered actuators and sensors to be used inside the MR environment. Due to the particularity of the examination setting, safety and compatibility criteria have to be followed to avoid risks to the operators, to the tested subjects or to the environment, and to prevent the formation of image artifacts. In this paper a novel automatic compatibility test for mechatronic devices designed to produce different kind of stimuli inside the MRI environment is described. A statistical test was exploited to evaluate changes in SNR values and time domain standard deviations between image sequences acquired under different experimental conditions. The test is performed on a phantom to assure reproducibility and reduce confounds. Tests on a subject are introduced, as well as reproducibility measures of activation maps in different experimental conditions. Compatibility tests with several materials and actuators are reported. Results of these experiments are analyzed to evaluate artifacts caused by the presence and actuation of the devices. (literal)
