- Infection has been implicated as a cause of atherosclerosis since the beginning of the 19th century. In the last years, however, new epidemiological and molecular data relating infection to several different diseases, including atherosclerosis, have appeared, stimulating the emergence of important paradigm shifts in how we think about the causes and progression of chronic conditions. In the following chapter available evidences on the role of infectious agents, with a special focus on the Hepatitis C virus, in atherosclerosis are reported. (literal)
