• Cryoconservation of farm animal genetic resources in Italy The article, after e brief introduction on objectives and methods of cryopreservation of farm animal genetic resources, including some suggestions for future research, presents the results of the census conducted in 2008-09, within the EURECA project, on the state of the art of cryopreservation in Italy of local cattle breeds. For each breed, among others, number of donors and doses of semen and embryos, pedigree information of donors, status of ownership, objectives of collection are presented. The results of a SWOT analysis of the cryopreservation system of farm animal genetic resources in Italy are also given. In addition the virtual cryobank \"Network of the Italian cryobanks of farm animal genetic resources (CRIONET-IT)\" recently created is presented. CRIONET-IT includes the software CryoWEB adapted to the Italian situation, characterized by the presence of many independent collections, and a website. The aims of CRIONET-IT includes the promotion of collaboration among collections, sharing information among collections and Institutions working in farm animal genetic resources conservation, development of cryoconservation programmes, as indicated by the Strategic Priority 8 of the Global Plan of Action for Animal Genetic Resources, adopted by the International Technical Conference on Animal genetic resources, Interlaken, September 2007.
