- During their growth microalgae excrete a large variety of organic compounds that form a gradient around the algal cells. This zone of organic enrichment, analogous to the rhizosphere of land plants, is termed Phycosphere. Bacterial communities and algal cells are closely linked through the phycosphere. The organic matter produced by different types of phytoplankton can cause shifts in the species composition of associated bacterial communities. In turn bacteria can play a major role in controlling phytoplankton dynamics, they may regulate algal blooms and stimulate or inhibit algal growth, they are capable of producing algicidal agents, of regulating algal production of toxins and altering algal physiology. Microalgae in culture collections are usually not axenic, i.e. several bacterial strains are co-enriched from the natural environment together with the algal cells. Moreover outdoor cultures of microalgae are carried out in non-sterile conditions, thus they are subjected to contaminations. Considering the role that bacteria may have on algal growth the aim of this study was to analyze the bacterial communities associated with an outdoor culture of Tetraselmis suecica strain OR and to determine the influence of this communities on algal growth.
From these results it appears that the bacterial flora in Tetraselmis suecica cultures is only in part resilient and that it has a positive effects on culture productivity.
