- UV have different role on prokaryotic cell functioning: filamentation and aggregation have been recently demonstrated in bacteria and algae. We studied the effect of UV and PAR on the aggregation of different strains of Synechococcus with phycoerythrin and phycocyanin acclimated at low (10 µmol m-2 s-1) and medium (100 µmol m-2 s-1) PAR. We obtained evidences of aggregation in the strains which were acclimated to low PAR and were exposed to PAR and UV. Conversely, Synechococcus previously acclimated to medium PAR did not aggregate significantly. A different response was also obtained with strains with a different pigment composition. In this presentation the ecological meaning of aggregation in single-cell Synechococcus strains is discussed. (literal)
