- Picocyanobacteria are ubiquitous microrganisms involved in the microbial loop, able to display different metabolic processes, interacting with the autotrophic and heterotrophic compartments, efficient competitors at limiting conditions (low light and low nutrient). Their ecological role as carbon reserve in ocean and lakes has been recognized but some aspect of their dynamics and functioning remains still unexplained.
The phylogeny of the 16S rDNA of Synechococcus and Prochlorococcus revealed the existence of marine and freshwater clusters and the absence of freshwater coccoid Prochlorococcus. The intergenic region (ITS) comprised between the 16S and 23S rDNA genes of bacterial rRNA has been successfully used to construct bacterial community fingerprinting profiles as the ITS exhibits a great deal of length and sequence variation in relation to different ecotypes.
Here I will present data on picocyanobacteria community of ultraoligotrophic and oligomesotrophic lakes of both emispheres. In particular the following issues will be discussed: 1) cluster succession in the seasonal dynamics of picocyanobacteria, 2) picocyanobacteria diversity along the vertical gradient, 3) phylogenetic trees of picocyanobacteria based on sequence data of ITS-1.
