  • Several freshwater picocyanobacterial strains were isolated and purified from lakes characterized by different trophic conditions. These strains show different pigment composition (phycoerythrin rich cell-PE and phycocyanin rich cell-PC) based upon their epifluorescent characteristics under blue and green excitation. Picocyanobacterial isolates were sequenced for their ribosomal 16S rDNA and we inferred phylogenetic trees with other strains already present in GenBank. Recently a correlation between pigment groups and phylogenetic clusters has been confirmed, however both pigment types have been observed in closely related strains. We selected some of them from different clades and we tested physiological responses of cultures in terms of light. In detail we assessed in lab experiments photosynthetic parameters (Pmax, Ek and á) using a Phyto-PAM (Walz, Germany). The study investigates the possibility for the photosynthetic efficiency at high flux densities to be an important proximate factor of different freshwater picocyanobacteria ecotypes. (literal)
