- Phycoerytrin-rich picocyanobacteria of deep ultraoligotrophic pristine lakes of North Patagonian region, occupy the Deep Chlorophyll Maxima niche, outcompeting micro and nanoplankton at very low P concentrations. The main groups of picocyanobacteria grazers in these lakes are represented by large mixotrophic ciliates (Ophrydium naumanni and Stentor araucanus) and nanoflagellates (Chrysochromulina parva and Rhodomonas lacustris).
In the deep North Italian subalpine lakes phycoerytrin-rich picocyanobacteria occupy the same deep niche but can also colonize successfully the surface layer. Picocyanobacteria main grazers are heterotrophic nanoflagellates (Chrysomonads), small ciliates and mesozooplankton (Daphnia).
We studied picocyanobacteria diversity in such a different ecological background to understand to which extent their success is due to metabolic plasticity or to genetic diversity. We analized the biodiversity by denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) of 16S rRNA gene fragments, subsequentially sequenced. (literal)
