  • In this presentation emphasis will be laid on the application and results of a macrofouling monitoring protocol in Mediterranean industrial cooling water plants as a tool for the water treatment optimization. The biomonitoring approach allows on-line adjustments to the chemical treatment strategy used by the plant management, changing the type of treatment, antifouling products, and treatment schedule. This approach has both economic and environmental advantages, since it also allows to considerably reduce the environmental impact of the water system treatment on the coastal marine ecosystem.
