- Biomarkers and biological indicators for environmental monitoring have played a leading role in environmental management. Controversies may arose when using imposex in neogastropods as indicator of tributyltin (TBT) contamination. TBT derivatives have been defined as the most toxic compounds released into the marine environment by man. Their presence is due to the use of antifouling paints incorporating TBT as a biocide. Using organotin compounds in antifouling systems was banned by the International Maritime Organization in 2003. Imposex, the superimposition of male sexual organs onto female Neogastropods is used world-wide as indicator of ecological impact of organotin based antifouling paint (TBT and TPhT). Biomonitoring showed an anomaly in the correlation between imposex and organostannic compounds tissue concentrations, generating doubts on the reliability of this biomonitoring tool. For this reason the imposex analysis in specimens of H. trunculus collected before the 1965 (year of the first patented use of TBT in antifouling paint) and controlled laboratory experiments of imposex induction by TBT and PCB injections into organisms were carried out. Results suggested that the level of imposex could not be considered as a specific biomarker for TBT contamination, but as a non specific response to stress stimuli, indicating a need for further research on mechanisms regulating sexual development in gastropods and their response to environmental pollution.
