- Abridged Abstract: This paper shows how in signed languages (SL) manual pointing and eye gaze direction are the primary means not only for distributing morphemic elements in the signing space but also for specifying their semantic values. Manual pointings have been extensively investigated in the SL literature. The same cannot be said for eye gaze direction. In this paper we explore the functions of the signer's eye gaze direction drawing on evidence on French (LSF) and Italian (LIS) SLs. We discuss and exemplify different types of iconicity that characterize signed discourse. We then examine the different linguistic and metalinguistic functions eye gaze direction fulfills, with and without other forms of pointing. We show that eye gaze alone is the primary means for: (a) governing linguistic interaction, and distinguishing different layers of discourse in signaling HIS; (b) redetermining the value of standard signs when these are incorporated in HIS. Eye gaze directions in conjunction with manual but also postural forms of pointing provide the means for redefining standard signs for metalinguistic purposes, constructing temporal and spatial reference, and specifying actancy relations.
