- The aim of our study was to set up an education program aimed to implement nutritional recommendations for diabetic patients, to be used in Italian diabetes care units.
We created a pilot program of nutritional education consisting of six 1-hour sessions, at one-two month intervals, with a group-based approach tailored to meet patients needs with the aim to promote life-long dietary changes. The program comprises: 1) scheduling the general characteristics of the interventions; 2) planning the content of each session. The program for type 2 diabetes comprises three sessions on energy balance and body weight. The forth session deals with the importance of the quantity and quality of dietary fat, the fifth is on dietary carbohydrate and fiber and the last one is on the role of dietary protein, sodium and alcohol consumption, and on the Mediterranean diet as useful nutritional model of wholesome diet. On the contrary, the program for type 1 diabetes comprises a single session on how to preserve normal weight, and three sessions on amount and quality of dietary carbohydrate and carbohydrate count. This educational program will be presented and discussed to the staff of different diabetic units where it will be implemented next year. The quality and efficacy of this educational program will be evaluated before and at the end of the program by monitoring changes in body weight, blood pressure, HbA1c, metabolic parameters and as well as dietary behaviour changes.
