  • In this contribution we illustrate how scatterometry wind fields at 25 km have been used to understand the performances of a Limited Area Model (LAM) applied to the Mediterranean Sea region. This is a particularly critical area for modeling, due to the important orography surrounding the basin and the presence of several mountainous islands. The comparisons, carried out over a two years period (October 2000-October 2002), demonstrated how well scatterometer winds describe the mesoscale features of the wind, in general better than the LAM model with grid size smaller than scatterometer spatial resolution. A survey of the identified sources of forecast errors indicates the important role of orography characterization. (literal)
