- ABSTRACT: The determination of the wind direction from the backscatter signatures
in SAR images is crucial for the evaluation of the wind field, once a
model converting the normalized radar cross section to wind speed is
available. One of the few methods able to extract the wind direction
from SAR images has been developed in past years using the
two-dimensional wavelet transform (Zecchetto et al., 2002, 2008). This
method, extensively applied to the Envisat ASAR Wide Swath images, has
been applied to Radarsat2 full polarimetric images with the aim of
understand how polarization influences the detection of the backscatter
cells related to the wind direction. Since the extraction of the wind
direction from SAR images still presents problems, mainly related to the
SAR image quality or to the complex geophysics in the imaged scene, the
objective of this investigation is to understand if polarimetry may help
the determination of the wind direction. Results of the analysis of few
Radarsat2 standard quad-pol images are provided. (literal)

- Abstract
- In SAR images of the sea surface, the determination of the wind direction is crucial for the evaluation of the associated wind speed.
One of the few methods able to extract the wind direction from SAR data has been developed in past years using the twodimensional
wavelet transform [1,2]. This method, extensively used with Envisat ASAR images, has been applied to Radarsat-2 fully
polarimetric images, to understand if and how polarization may be used to detect the backscatter cells related to locally coherent
wind cells. The interpretation of SAR images of the sea surface is still difficult, due to the complexity of the geophysics and of the
interaction mechanism of electromagnetic and sea waves. This study aims investigating how polarimetry may be used in this context. (literal)
