  • Our objective is to compare the differential impact of “privately funded” (firm own resources and private external resources, mainly bank credit) and “public funded” industrial R&D expenditures. We aim to shed more light on the following research questions: have public subsidies improved firm technological outcomes? How much and in which direction? What is the separate impact of own and supported R&D? Do different mixes of financial resources provide differential results? Starting from an analysis of the input additionality, aimed at detecting the presence/absence of R&D investment crowding-out, we will focus our attention on the output/technological additionality, referring to changes on number of patents, new entries in the patenting activity and some other structural modifications such as firm size, capital/labour intensity, firm competitive position.
