  • Alnus cordata Loisel. is largely utilized in central Italy for reforestation of badly drained and wet soils, and for agro-forestry purposes. Recently wilting and mort ity of A. cordata individuals were observed in a nursery on 1-2 years old seedlings in Northern Tuscany (4) and in a 6 years old plantation in Umbria. Among the different woody species present the latter site (alder, cherry and walnut), only A. cordata trees showed symptoms resembling those of Ink disease. They were characterized by sparse yellowish-brown foliage with abnormally small leaves and dark stained necrosis of the bark at collar level (1). In the nursery death of tap root and lateral roots and dying of seedlings were also observed. Tissue isolation from infected parts of the plants yielded a Phytophthora cambivora-like species in culture. The morpho-physiological features of the alder isolates from the nursery resembled those of the Swedish variant of the Alder Phytophthora (2, 3). Two-year-old alder seedlings (1,3 cm diameter, height 70 cm) grown in pots were wound- inoculated in the trunk with a Phytophthora isolate from the nursery. Six weeks later symptoms identical to those described above were observed and from diseased bark tissue y-ielded fungal colonies resembling those described above. (literal)
