- Ulmus glabra, U. minor and U. laevis represent the three native elm species in Europe. The arrival of Ophiostoma novo-ulmi in the early 1970s has resulted in a massive, destructive epidemic in which most mature European elrns have died. Because of this epidemic (Dutch elrn disease), a 5 year EU project started in 1997 in order to coordinate the conservation of the elm genetic resources among European countries. One objective of the project was to screen elms for low susceptibility to DED. More than 300 elms fiom nine different countries (Belgium, France, Gerrnany, Greece, Italy, Portugal, Spain, Sweden and UK) have been propagated by means of root and stem cuttings. At least six ramets were obtained per clone. Seven plots were installed at different locations, and the plants placed in single rows at a distance of 0.5 m between plants and 1.5 m between rows. Five clones were used as controls (Sapporo, Lobel Cornmelin, CEM077 and CEM085). The plants were frst inoculated after three years of being propagated, when they were at least about 2 m high. Inoculations were not undertaken the same year. Local and highly virulent strains of O. novo-ulmi were inoculated during May or June in the lower third of the crown through conidia suspensions (0.2 ml per tree and 10(6) spores/ml). Plant height before inoculation was measured, and wilting at regular intervals (% defoliation of the crown) was registered. A final assessment of dieback percentage in October/November was carried out. The susceptibility of elms varied within years and plots, rnaking the results difficult to compare. Interactions in the wilting of the control trees between different countries were also found. Some clones resulted interesting because of its high tolerance and growth. A classification of the clones attending to their susceptibility will be presented. (literal)
