  • In the frame of the RES GEN CT 96-78 EU project (Coordination for conservation, characterisation, collection and utilisation of genetic resources of European Elms), some of the partners have set up clonal collections for germplasm conservation. In the light of a possible reintroduction of these clones into the environrnent, it is of interest to characterise them and to assess their adaptability and, therefore, phenotypic plasticity. Particular attention was given to the timing of the vegetative budburst (BB). In this paper the bud burst of 1147 clones belonging to the three European elm species (560 U. minor; 415 U. glabra and 170 U. laevis) fiom 6 collections located in Spain, France, Belgium, Germany and Italy were considered. BB was observed on the ramets during the spring 2000, 2001 and 2002 and Thermal Time (T) (since 1 February) and Chilling (C) (since 1 November) were calculated. A relationship T = a+b exp(rC) has fitted for each species. Comparing the obtained curves, U. minor resulted less T demanding at low C level. Although a high percent of variance could be defined by these curves, nevertheless pararneters were seldom significant, particularly for field elm. Relationships among BB, T and latitude variation were studied in a collection site in which clones were originated fiom a wide latitudinal range (20°). Parameters resulted significantly and positively related and the obtained coefficients of determination ranked very high. On clones native to a narrow latitudinal range (1.5°) was found a significant and positive correlation among BB, T and altitude. Since high altitudes were related to lower latitudes, this result confirrned the above relation among BB, T and latitude. A factorial analysis was calculated considering several field elrn clones, shared by three collections in two years, and natives to different latitudes. The analysis showed significant effect on BB and T of all the considered variables (clone, year, collection site) and of their interactions. Northern clones resulted like each other and significantly more T demanding at low C regimes than southern ones, while differences tend to disappear for higher C levels. Southern clones showed to be less demanding in C. An appropriate choose of clones cornrnon to different collections allows to improve the arnount of explained variance fiom the T-C curves and their own significance. (literal)
