- Imaging techniques exploiting some kind of spectroscopy can combine spectral with two or three-dimensional spatial resolution. One of most challenging ideas is the possibility of pushing the observed spatial resolution down to a size well below the used wavelength. The frontier of these approaches is the study of single molecules or atoms. In the field of magnetic resonances, the possibility of observing effects related to a single spin is strongly hindered by problems related to sensitivity and spatial resolution. However the strong interest in such phenomena (relaxation processes, quantum computing) has prompted the development of novel detection methods associated to microscopy methodologies. Two methods have been proposed, both based on scanning probe techniques: the Magnetic Resonance Force Microscopy (MRFM) and the Electron Spin Resonance Scanning Tunneling Microscopy (ESR-STM). The state of the art of these methods and related applications are reviewed, including the stimulating possibility of observing phenomena related to a single nuclear spin. (literal)
