  • One of the major challenge of scientific research in scaffold design is to develop well-organized structures with controlled porosity in terms of pore size, pore shape and interconnection degree. In this field, thermally induced phase separation (TIPS) technique of polymer/solvent binary system allows obtaining scaffold for tissue engineering applications with requested morphological and structural properties. Phase separation was obtained by reducing temperature of binary system to induce the formation of two different phases, one rich of polymer and the other rich of solvent. The changing of temperature, cooling rate and polymer/solvent concentration in turn, determine different sizes and shapes of forming phases due to different residence times in the binodal and spinodal regions. Solvent removal by sublimation or solvent exchange, allow the formation of spatially well-distributed pores in place of solvent phases previously formed [1][2]. Moreover solvent crystallization occurring determines the formation of solid phases which influences pores morphologies determining an highly oriented structural porosity. (literal)
