  • Biodegradable polymers have been used extensively as scaffolding materials to generate new tissues. These scaffolds should possess specific physical characteristics including a three-dimensional highly interconnected porosity networks, and a suitable surface morphology for cell attachment, proliferation and differentation. Several methods exist to create macro porous scaffolds for tissue engineering, and common methods typically employ a solid porogen within a three dimensional polymer matrix to create a well-defined pore size, pore structure and porosity degree. In this work, different three-dimensional porous poly å-caprolactone-based scaffolds were fabricated via solvent casting and salt leaching process. NaCl crystals were used as porogen agent. In order to enhance bioactive properties of scaffold some structures were filled with hydroxyapatite (HA) powder. Finally, in order to increase mechanical properties of scaffold and mimic bone-like behavior, poly-lactide acid fibers were added as reinforcement by filament winding technique. (literal)
