  • Calcium Phosphates are widely used as bone substitute in orthopaedic, reconstructive, and oral surgery because of their beneficial effect on bone healing. As organic phase an hydrogel has been used: Poly (VinylAlcohol) which is one of the most widely used for biomedical applications. The main characteristic of this hydrogel is its water solubility: in fact it is possible to obtain a ready to use system without using toxic substances, which will hard in a clinically acceptable period of time. First aim ofthis work is to evaluate the cytotoxycity of both composite (H-cem/PVA) and H-cem alone.Osteosarcoma cell line (U2OS) has been used and the cellular response, to the specimens direct exposure, has been assessed in term of cell vitality, proliferation and differentiation. On the basis of “in vitro” promising results, “in vivo” test were performed to evaluate bone ingrowth in critical size defects created in the distal femur of rabbits and comparatively treated with H-cem and H-cem/PVA,bone healing rate will be measured at 4 and 12 weeks by means of histology and histomorphometry.
