- CECE-CEMA Summit 2011: Technical Forum on Energy Efficiency and Mobile Machinery
During the Forum, which was held on 12th October, the political and legislative framework for 2050 was outlined. The technical environment and the common CECE-CEMA position developed by a group of senior industry representatives were also presented.
According to Marek ?turc (DG Climate), the road to the future is already paved with many targets to tackle climate change and to obtain a low carbon economy by 2050 but there are still some policy -making challenges and still much work has to be done. Professor Roberto Paoluzzi (Imamoter Research Institute) gave an insight on the tendencies of future technologies.
In the second part, examples, technologies and experiences of CO2 reduction were presented by Prof. Marcus Geimer (Karlsruhe Institute of Technology), who outlined the mobile machinery technological innovation trends from the past and the present, Barbara Lax (Caterpillar) spoke about machine and solutions efficiency and Jacques Bernard presented the EFFICIENT20 EU project on how to encourage fuel saving measures by operator training. In addition, Dr. Sanderine Nonhebel (University of Groningen) presented the role of agricultural machines in agricultural resource management and stressed the importance of the end-product while Dr. Eberhard Nacke (Claas) provided industry examples on process efficiency.
Dr. Günter Hähn, vice-chairman of the CECE-CEMA high level group on CO2, clearly gave the message that we are a complex industry and that CECE and CEMA have a proven record of increase in product efficiency. He added that in order to achieve CO2 reduction the whole process needs to be optimized and concluded by saying that market driven innovation is a better motivation for the industry to reduce CO2 than top-down EU regulation.
An interesting debate followed the presentations. At the end of the discussion, the European Commission, welcomed the CECE and CEMA approach but also pointed out that the legislator still has a role in the future when it comes to defining targets for an effective and timely CO2 reduction. (literal)
