- Silica nanoparticles in association with the cationic surfactant CTAB have been extensively investigated during the last years for the capability to stabilise liquid-liquid interfaces and provide emulsions with outstanding stability features. CTAB adsorbs to a large extent on the silica particles surface, so that tuning the ratio between CTAB and silica content provides a simple way to control the particles hydrophobicity and therefore their segregation at the liquid-liquid interface. The formation of packed particle layers at the liquid-liquid interface has been in fact recognised as the major stabilising factor for these kind of emulsions (literal)
