  • The effect of nanometric solid particles on the properties of water/oil and water/air interfaces is an important topic because of their employment as stabilizers of emulsions and foams. Depending on the state of their surface and in particular, on the level of hyrophobocity/lipophilicity, nanoparticles tend to transfer from the dispersion bulk to the interfacial layer. This surface accumulation implies a change of the macroscopic properties of the fluid interface that can be the reason for the role played by nanoparticles in preventing coalescence of drops and bubbles and for the stabilizing effect in emulsions and foams Aim of this work is a deeper understanding of particle/fluid interface interactions and their effect on the macroscopic interfacial properties, which are expected to be related to the characteristics of the disperse systems. In this study nanometric colloidal silica dispersions in the presence of a cationic surfactant (CTAB) have been investigated. In such mixed systems it is possible to obtain different degree of affinity between particles and liquid interface, changing the dispersion composition. The equilibrium and dynamic characteristics of the dispersion-air and dispersion-oil interfacial layer, like interfacial tension and surface rheology, have been evaluated at different dispersion composition, using drop/bubble tensiometers. These results have been crossed with an optical observation of the behaviour of emulsion droplets obtained with the same system (literal)
