- BaZr0.1Ti0.9O3 ceramics with various grain size have been prepared via solid state reaction, by sintering various temperatures. Optimum parameters for calcination and sintering have been found in order to obtain pure perovskite phase, high density ceramics and homogeneous microstructures. The dielectric data (Fig. 1) show a diffuse phase transition with a mixed ferroelectric-relaxor character and a maximum at 92°C, with a small thermal hysteresis of 2-3°C. The dielectric constant at room temperature is about 3000 for all the samples, but its maximum value at the ferro-para phase transition increases from ~5000 for the sample sintered at 1350°C to ~13500 for the sample sintered at 1450°C as a result of the increasing grain size. The losses were higher for the sample sintered at 1400°C. All the samples show an increasing of losses above 120°C due to thermally-activated space charge phenomena. The temperature dependence of the local order parameter has been calculated by using the modified Landau model for relaxors. The local order parameter has non-zero values even at a few hundreds degrees above the temperature corresponding to the maximum of the dielectric constant. Further, the switching properties and First Order Reversal Curves (FORC) diagrams [1] are used to describe the switching properties. (literal)
