Abstract
  • This research is of strongly interdisciplinary character and is concerned with the fundamental analogies between light and matter waves. In particular, we will study transport phenomena in disordered systems. In very recent years several interesting phenomena were observed for the transport of light waves in disordered systems, including weak and strong (Anderson) localization, optical Bloch oscillations and Zener tunnelling. The observation of many of these effects, was done by the Optics of complex systems group at LENS. The photonic materials used for these studies include disordered dielectrics and photonic crystals with controlled amount of disorder. In parallel, the transport of matter waves and in particular of Bose-Einstein condensates (BEC's) in complex potentials has been on important focus of the atomic physics group at LENS, leading to important milestones like the observation of Bloch oscillations for cold atom systems and the first results towards Anderson localization of a BEC. It is the purpose of this module to bring these to fields together, combine knowledge, and explore the analogies between these fascinating transport phenomena. (literal)
