  • Mar Piccolo of Taranto is an inner sea, the more confined basin in a system comprising also the open area of the Gulf of Taranto and the semi-enclosed Mar Grande. Mar Piccolo hosts many mussel culture plans with an estimated production of more than 50,000 tons per year and is characterized also by heavy anthropogenic impacts due to industries and other human activities. In order to analyze the functioning of Mar Piccolo ecosystem, to better couple this knowledge with the productivity of the basin, we are monitoring several abiotic and biotic features in the water column and sediments. In particular, physico-chemical variables are measured in the water column and, among organisms, heterotrophic and autotrophic picoplankton, phytoplankton (active and resting stages), microbial pollution indicators and potential pathogenic vibrios are investigated as well. The so far obtained results show that Mar Piccolo is a marine area with biotic features typical of confined areas such as lagoons. In fact, besides abiotic features peculiar of marine coastal areas, there is a high diversity of phytoplankton (both for active and resting stages), together with great fluctuations of densities and species richness over a seasonal time scale. The presence of potential pathogenic vibrios and toxic phytoplankton, together with the observed strong fluctuations of abiotic and biotic features, need careful analyses in order to protect the environment and safeguard the mussel culture activity.
