- The goal of this study was to evaluate the quality of sediment from three sites of Mar Piccolo and one of Mar Grande in Taranto (Ionian coast, Italy).
Toxicity tests were performed with the amphipod Corophium insidiosum, the bacterium Vibrio fischeri and the bivalve Mytilus galloprovincialis larvae. The integration of biological tests results, with amphipods, bivalve and the luminescent bioassay Microtox® evidences some differences in the toxicity evaluation of the liquid phases for the Mar Piccolo sites. Infact, pore water analyzed with Microtox® system showed no evidence of toxicity, while elutriate analyzed with bivalve larvae showed a high level of toxicity. The results obtained using amphipods and Vibrio fischeri on sediments showed a very high level of toxicity.
Instead, in the site of the Gulf of Taranto no evidence of toxicity were find using all biological tests.
