  • In order to provide information on the ecological impact of sediment contamination on aquatic biota Numerical Sediment Quality Guidelines (SQGs) and sediment toxicity bioassays were carefully recommended. The use of a single species for a correct evaluation of the toxicity levels can be reductive, compared to the complexity of the ecosystems, so it is better to use a test battery formed by organisms that can be representative of the entire system of interest. In this study ERL (effect range low)/ERM (effect range medium value) and TEL (threshold effect level)/PEL (probable effect level) guidelines have been used. The TEL/PEL analysis suggested that sediments in Mar Piccolo should contain acutely toxic concentrations of metals. Toxicity tests were performed with three different organisms: one Amphipoda (Corophium insidiosum), one Isopoda (Idotea baltica) and bacterium (Vibrio fischeri). The results allow us to determine that Vibrio fischeri seems to be slightly more sensitive to the contaminants in these specific sediments than C. insidiosum and I. baltica; the integrated result of the biological tests evidences the same global toxicity evaluation. On the basis of results obtained a good agreement was reported between chemical data and response of the biological endpoints tested. (literal)
