  • The Taranto Sea System (southern Italy, Ionian Sea) includes the Mar Grande and the Mar Piccolo basins, this last with two inlets: Primo Seno and Secondo Seno. Fragmented historical data series of chemical-physical variables are available since 1918 to 1969. Since 1996 till now the area was continuously monitored. Sampling was carried out twice a month at seven stations in the Mar Piccolo and three stations in the Mar Grande. The variables examined were: temperature, salinity, chl-a, dry weight, organic matter, transparency, ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, phosphate, silicate, total nitrogen and total phosphorous. The data collected were statistically processed to evaluate both spatial and temporal changes. The results showed that the basins are characterized by different levels of confinement and eutrophication. Moving from the Mar Grande to the Secondo Seno, the innermost inlet of the Mar Piccolo, salinity and transparency values show a progressive reduction, while chlorophyll, ammonia, nitrite, phosphate, silicate, total phosphorous and nitrogen concentrations increase. Only nitrate concentration is higher in the Primo Seno. Always along the same direction, clusters of homogeneous stations for each variable were detected. In all the stations, a seasonal trend is obviously shown by temperature. Similar seasonal trends were observed for transparency, salinity and ammonia only in the Mar Piccolo, and for nitrate, nitrite and silicate only in the Secondo Seno. (literal)
