  • Continuous increase in the atmosphere of anthropogenic CO2 emission, mainly caused by fossil fuel-burning power plants stimulated to find CO2 fixation methods which are largely applicable and economically convenient. As already reported for microalgae, the use of macroalgae for biological CO2 fixation could be optimised using half-closed systems. In this respect, a prototype of a photobioreactor for macroalgae was designed and constructed. The prototype was manufactured with the following features: 1) possibility of working with the continuous renewal of the culture medium; 2) possibility of changing the working temperature; 3) possibility of changing the stirring rate by means of both a mechanical low speed stirring system and a variable flow system for the recirculation of the culture medium; 4) possibility to expose to light the most part of seaweed biomass; 5) possibility to reduce the biofilm settlement on the photobioreactor walls; 6) possibility of changing CO2 concentration in the culture medium; 7) possibility of performing cultures by either artificial light or sun light. The photobioreactor is made by PMMA. It consists of a horizontal cylindrical core closed at the ends by two tight discs. An internal apparatus allows both the exposition of the whole seaweed biomass to the light and the detachment of the biofilm from the walls. Outwardly, into a vertical cylinder, both the temperature control of the culture medium and the aeration with air and CO2 are realised. (literal)
