  • Phenol is a man-made as well as a naturally occurring aromatic compound and an important intermediate in the biodegradation of natural and industrial aromatic compounds. In this study twenty-nine bacterial strains were isolated from waste water polluted soil based on their ability to growth in presence of phenol and polyphenols addition to Mineral Basal Medium (MBM) in aerobic condition. In particular, three strains of these bacteria were found to be able to degrade as sole carbon source aromatic acids such as phenol, cathecol, caffeic acid and ferulic acid. The degradation was of 99% in a maximum of three days. For these strains it was studied the taxonomical affiliation by amplification and sequencing of 16S rRNA genes. One of the isolates, able to use only phenol as carbon source, was classified belonging to Arthrobacter sulfuresus, the other two, able to groth on polyphenols, were classified as Pseudomonas synxantha and Pseudomonas oryzihabitans. For the Psudomonas strains it was not konwn the phenols degradation capability. The result of this study shows that it is possible design biological methods using indigenous bacteria to obtaine phenols decrease concentration in industrial wastewaters. (literal)
