  • In this work the taxonomical and trophic structures of amphipods communities in the Mar Piccolo of Taranto were studied. A total of 51 stations was investigated: 24 in the First Inlet and 27 in the Second Inlet. The feeding structure analysis was performed by assigning each species to a trophic group according to literature data. Six trophic groups were distinguished: DSF (Deposit-suspension feeders), HeDF (Herbivores-Deposit Feeders), DC (Deposit Feeders-Carnivores), SF (Suspension Feeders), DF (Deposit Feeders), O (Omnivores). Community parameters such as specific richness (D), abundance (ind m2), Qualitative Dominance (%DQ: % number of species), Quantitative dominance (%DI: % number of individual). To evaluate the degree of ecological importance of each trophic group, the trophic importance index (Ti) was used. The dominant trophic groups encountered in the Mar Piccolo were HeDf and DSF with Gammarus aequicauda, G. insensibilis, Monocorophium insidiosum and Microdeutopus anomalus. The distribution of the amphipod fauna seems to be controlled either by extend of water exchange of with the open sea and the substrate characteristics that play an important role in biodiversity. The presence of these species, in almost every station, evidences that Mar Piccolo suffers from a limited influence from the open sea. This situation is confirmed by the low specific richness and high abundance observed. (literal)
