  • The increase of the wood raw material deficit, and, on the other hand, the increase of number of the plants processing wood, including wood-based panels factories, forces searching of the alternative raw materials for wood-based panels production. In case of introduction of alternative lignocellulose raw materials to particleboards production in the near future, there is a necessity to proper research method selection to characterise these materials. Apart from the typical method of the physical (density, moisture content and other), and chemical (i.e. buffer capacity) parameters characterization, the characterization of materials by wettability can be helpful. At the stage of raw materials preparation and boards pressing, the measurement of the surface tension and contact angle can give the information needed for optimal resin selection. Although usually it is not a problem for conventional wood raw materials, it can be very important in case of straw, due to the chemical composition and presence of wax layer. In case of final product (unfinished panels), the wettability measurement can help to properly select the finishing method (i.e. lacquering, laminating). The characterization of wettability can be useful for testing panels natural durability, especially during exposition to humid conditions. The proper finishing of wood-based materials can significantly increase the durability and resistance to atmospheric conditions. The aim of this work was to measure the wettability of selected alternative lignocellulose raw materials utilizable for particleboards production. The rape straw and wood of fast-growing trees were used for characterization. The surface wettability of the boards produced with use of these raw materials was also evaluated. (literal)
