- Values of the fracture energy of materials are usually calculated in relation to the nominal area of the damaged surface. However it is clear that the fracture plane is not smooth and varies significantly in each experiemnt. It is especially noticeable in evaluation of wood-based materials. The paper presents an alternative approach for evaluation of the real fracture area. A novel 3D scanner scrutinizes the geometry of the sample. Dedicated software preprocesses the height information provided by the scanner and calculates area of the damaged surface. It was found that the processing algorithm has a great impact on the obtained values of the area. An influence of the filter's cut-of is also discussed. The new method is applied to fractured surfaces of particle board broken in plane. (literal)
