  • The sensor is based on a silicon micro-machined pressure gauge inserted in a cylindrical Teflon shell. Teflon provides protection, it works as a medium between the gauge and wood, and it makes possible to handle the sensor. In this configuration the pressure gauge has directional, axis-selective sensitivity and thanks to a pre-load system, when inserted in a drill hole at a given depth in the wood, the sensor can directly measure the tensile and compressive stress produced by the differential shrinkages and swellings in the diameter of the hole. Research activities during the last five years lead to the current pre industrial version which has been tested in laboratory conditions. The study of the influence of variables such as temperature and time (relaxation) on the signal allowed to define the signal conditioning algorithms. At present, the sensor allows to visualize the trend of the stress during the drying process and to catch some critical points such as stress reversal time and the effect of the conditioning phase on the internal stress. This information suggests the possibility to use the sensor for the control of the process on industrial scale, with great potential benefits in terms of reduction of drying time and optimisation of quality. On the other hand, some still existing problems reduce the quality of the signal and they do not allow the accurate measure of the absolute value of the stress which is needed to estimate the risk of split and check occurrence.
