  • Since the seventeen century, according to Stradivari and other famous violin-makers, spruce resonance timber growth in Fiemme Valley is the best material for cellos, violins and pianos. At present, one fourth of the total amount of resonance wood employed for musical instruments in the world is produced in Fiemme Valley, within the middle of alpine chain. A large sampling carried out in co-operation with the forest managers, the timber graders and the wood resonance producer allowed us to study the main properties of the resonance wood — such as density, shrinkage and swelling, earlywood and latewood growth patterns, the colour coordinates and some dynamic properties as well — according to different quality grades of resonance wood. Four classes from ‘grade 1 Extra’ to ‘grade 3’ define the quality of raw material, according to the visual grading rule based on the experience of timber graders. (literal)
