Abstract

• The goal of VirtualRome project is to provide a web-based infrastructure for distribution, collection, annotation and sharing over the web of 3D interactive content such as actual and reconstructed landscape. The data come from various sources such as laser scanners and laser total station of monuments, virtual reconstructions at different scales, GIS and remote sensing data: from landscape to building and artifacts, all pertaining the Rome area. Our project is aimed at trying to reuse content already developed for museums installations or researches in a web environment by integrating open source technologies. For this project we have developed a framework for the integration of 3D realtime application within web browsers; currently Windows Firefox and Internet Explorer are supported, Firefox Linux support is still ongoing. In order to maximize flexibility, the framework is implemented as two distinct components that connects through a simple API: one handle browsers integration and general Javascript interface.
