- Abstract
- Membrane interacting toxins are secreted as soluble peptides or proteins by a variety of organisms like bacteria, plants and animals.1,2 To express their pathogenic effects they are able to incorporate into the cell plasma membrane and interfere with its integrity. They can either permit the translocation to the cytosol of a toxic moiety with enzymatic activity or directly increase the permeability of the membrane to small molecules. Interestingly, both these routes lead to the formation of new exogenous channels in the plasma membrane. Toxins in the first group are referred to as the A-B super-family,3,4 whereas toxins of the second kind belong to the so-called membrane-damaging/pore-forming super-group.5-7 Because of the similarities in membrane interaction, we will deal in this chapter with both of them, although the term pore-forming toxins would normally be reserved to members of the second group. Our aim will be to show the importance and significance of liposomes as a model of the cell plasma membrane to better understand cell-toxin interaction.
